History of the Fox Farm location
The area now known as Fox Farm Road in Wilmington, New York, boasts a rich history that reflects the region's evolving economic and recreational landscape.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Lake Placid region saw the rise of silver fox farms, capitalizing on the demand for luxurious fur. One notable establishment was Sterling's Silver Fox Farm, which later evolved into the "Home of 1000 Animals," operating until 1976.
These farms not only contributed to the local economy but also became roadside attractions, drawing visitors curious about the foxes and the fur industry.
By 1973, the area underwent a transformation from fur farming to outdoor recreation. The property along Fox Farm Road was developed into a campground. This campground operated for nearly five decades, adapting to the growing interest in nature-based tourism. After being closed for a few years, we are happy to welcome back campers to the new Camp Whiteface Mountain in Summer of 2025.
